While it's not the greatest capture that I could have hoped for.... it happened, I saw it happen, and I am going to share it with you. It was small, only about 2.5 inches long, and I was about 8 feet away. I was also teetering on the edge of the bank to get the best angle so it is what it is. And what it is, is what I thought was a dragonfly having a snack... until my good friend questioned that it might just be a damselfly. And, so, off I was to find out. I confirmed my findings by comparing the differences between the two.
A few ways of knowing the difference is that dragonflies have eyes that seem to touch at the top of their heads, while damselflies have eyes that are clearly separate and on the sides of their head. Dragonflies have more bulky bodies while damselflies have bodies that are more slender. One more difference is that, when dragonflies have their wings in a resting position, they are normally held open. A damselfly will hold its wings closed and over its abdomen.
So, there you have it... a damselfly discovery.
